Main Steps of Vacuum Filtration

Vacuum filtration is a technique that could separate the solid from the liquid vacuum filtration process. The following vacuum filtration steps and vacuum filtration procedure could keep everything running normally.

1. Setup the filtration apparatus: The filtration apparatus consists of a filter flask, a filter funnel, filter paper, and a vacuum pump. The filter flask is attached to the vacuum pump, and the filter funnel is placed on top of the flask. The specific operation is as follows:

  • a. Put the rubber plug on the flask opening. There should be a hole in the center of the plug so that the funnel can get into the flask closely and safely in case hitting the glass.
  • b. Put the funnel into the plug. Put them together as an entity and then connect them to the flask.
  • c. Use the rubber tubing to connect the side nozzle and the vacuum pump (standard vacuum filtration pump, anti-corrosion diaphragm vacuum pump).

Put the filter paper into the Buchner funnel and try to make an accurate match. If the diameter of the filter paper is too large, cut it to the proper shape with scissors.


2. Prepare the mixture to be filtered: Tpour the mixture of the solid and liquid into the Buchner funnel through the filter paper. The mixture should be poured slowly to prevent the filter paper from tearing.

3. Apply vacuum: The vacuum pump is turned on, and the pressure in the filter flask is reduced. This creates a pressure difference across the filter paper, which pulls the liquid through the filter paper and leaves the solid behind.

4. Collect the filtrate: The liquid that passes through the filter paper is called the filtrate. Filtrate be sucked into the clean flask under the filter flask by the vacuum.

5. Wash the solid: Once the filtration is complete, the solid remaining on the filter paper is washed with a suitable solvent to remove any remaining impurities.

6. Dry the solid: The washed solid is removed from the filter paper and dried to obtain the final product.

7. Clean the apparatus: The filtration apparatus is disassembled, and the filter paper and any remaining solids are disposed of properly. The apparatus is cleaned thoroughly and stored for future use.

This vacuum filtration procedure and technology could also be applied in syntheses to produce the solid in the reaction or analysis including the gravimetric analysis of suspended solids. Remember to be careful during vacuum filtration steps to avoid damaging the filter paper or membrane or accidentally drawing air into the system.
