Filtration is a technique of removing solid impurities from an organic solution or isolating an organic solid. There are two different types of filtration: gravity filtration and vacuum filtration.

If the liquid is what you want, you can not use vacuum filtration to filter a solid from a liquid. If the liquid is a low boiling, the vacuum filtration is limited also because the solvent that boils at about 125 degrees or lower will boil off under the reduced pressure in the vacuum flask.

Connection of Vacuum Filtration

Spin-lock connection creates a convenient and stable assembly without clamps, and the fence-like platform avoids waste bottles tipping. Analytical Procedures of Vacuum Filtration

Set Up the Filtration Apparatus: Assemble the Buchner or Hirsch funnel with the filter flask. Connect the vacuum pump or aspirator to the flask to create a vacuum.

Prepare the Filter Paper: Place a piece of filter paper in the funnel. Wet it with a small amount of the liquid or solvent to create a seal and ensure proper filtration.

Pour the Sample: Carefully pour the liquid-solid mixture (sample) onto the center of the wetted filter paper. The vacuum will pull the liquid through the filter paper, leaving the solid behind.

Apply Vacuum: Turn on the vacuum pump or open the aspirator to create a vacuum. This will draw the liquid through the filter paper, leaving the solid particles on the paper.

Wash the Residue (If Needed): If additional purification is required, wash the solid residue on the filter paper with a small amount of the washing liquid. Apply the vacuum again to remove the wash liquid.

Turn Off Vacuum: Once the filtration is complete, turn off the vacuum pump or close the aspirator valve.

Remove Residue: Carefully remove the filter paper with the solid residue from the funnel.

Collect Filtrate (If Needed): The liquid portion that passed through the filter paper is the filtrate. It can be collected in a separate container for further analysis or processing.

Clean Up: Dispose of the filter paper and solid residue appropriately. Clean the filtration apparatus for future use.

Hawach vacuum filtration is mainly used in analytical procedures which include collecting a particulate from a liquid suspension. The liquid is poured into a funnel and flowed through a filter, which retains the particulate, and filtrates can be put into a filter flask, directly or via a vacuum manifold.
